지난 시간에 이어서 오스카 와일드의 『행복한 왕자(The Happy Prince)』를 함께 읽어봅시다. 우리말이 원문에서는 어떻게 쓰였을지 생각하면서 읽어봅시다.

“Swallow, Swallow, little Swallow,” said the Prince, “will you not stay with me for one night, and be my messenger? The boy is so thirsty, and the mother so sad.”

“I don’t think I like boys,” answered the Swallow. “Last summer, when I was staying on the river, there were two rude boys, the miller’s sons, who were always throwing stones at me. They never hit me, of course; we swallows fly far too well for that, and besides, I come of a family famous for its 민첩함; but still, it was a mark of disrespect.”

But the Happy Prince looked so sad that the little Swallow was sorry. “It is very cold here,” he said; “but I will stay with you for one night, and be your messenger.”

“Thank you, little Swallow,” said the Prince.

“제비야, 제비야, 작은 제비야. 나하고 하룻밤 같이 머물면서 내 심부름꾼이 되어 주지 않겠지? 소년은 너무 목이 마르고 엄마는 매우 슬퍼하는구나!” 하고 왕자는 말했습니다.

“나는 남자아이들을 싫어해요.” 제비가 말했습니다. “지난여름 강가에서 지낼 때 물방앗간 주인의 버릇없는 두 아들이 제게 매번 돌을 던졌어요. 물론 맞지는 않았어요, 우리들은 돌보다 훨씬 빠르게 나니까요. 게다가 나는 빠르기로 유명한 집안 출신이거든요. 하지만 돌을 던지는 것은 무례한 일이에요.”

그러나 행복한 왕자가 너무 슬퍼 보여서 작은 제비는 미안한 마음이 들었습니다. “여기는 참 춥네요. 하지만 왕자님과 하룻밤을 지내면서 왕자님의 심부름을 해 드리겠어요.” 제비가 말했습니다.

“고맙다, 작은 제비야.”하고 왕자가 말했습니다.
