제비는 강을 건널 때 배의 돛대에 달린 등불을 보았습니다. 유대인 거리를 지날 때는 나이 많은 유대인들이 흥정하고 구리 저울에 돈을 달아서 나누는 것도 보았습니다. 마침내 가난한 집에 도착한 제비는 집 안을 들여다보았습니다. 아이는 심한 열로 침대 위에서 뒹굴고, 너무 지친 아이의 어머니는 잠들어 있었습니다. 제비는 안으로 날아 들어가서 상 위에 있는 골무 옆에다 큰 루비를 놓았습니다. 그러고 조용히 침대 주위를 날아다니며 날개로 아이의 이마에 부채질을 해 주었습니다. “시원하네. 병이 나을 것 같아.”라고 말하고 아이는 기분 좋은 잠 속으로 빠져들어 갔습니다.
