U.S. FDA Approves Abortion Pill

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the so-called pill marketed in the U.S. as Mifeprex. Its generic name is mifepristone. Women will have the option to terminate up to 49 days into the pregnancy. Experts say it has shown to be effective at ending pregnancies in about 92 to 95 percent of cases. But before women can be considered for this option, a series of exams must be administered. The treatment plan involves three visits to a doctor's office. The abortion can be completed in as little as six hours or take up to a week to complete. Side effects include uterine cramping, heavy bleeding, nausea, and fatigue.
