Once when Caesar was passing through a little country village, all the men, women, and children of the place, came out to see him. There were not more than fifty of them, all together, and they were led by their mayor, who told each one what to do.
These simple people stood by the roadside and watched Caesar pass. The mayor looked very proud and happy, for was he not the ruler of this village? He felt that he was almost as great a man as Caesar himself.
Some of the fine officers who were with Caesar laughed. They said, "See how that fellow struts at the head of his little flock!"
"Laugh as you will," said Caesar, "he has reason to be proud. I would rather be the head man of a village than the second man in Rome!"

언젠가 시저가 작은 시골 마을을 지날 때, 그곳의 모든 남자, 여자, 어린이들이 그를 보기 위해 밖으로 나왔습니다. 그들은 모두 50명을 넘지 않았으며, 그들 각자에게 행동지침을 일러주고 있는 촌장이 그들을 인도하고 있었습니다.

시저와 함께 있던 고급 관리들 몇몇이 웃었습니다. 그들은 말했습니다. “보라구, 저 작은 무리를 이끌고 있는 저 친구가 얼마나 뽐내고 있는가!”
“실컷 웃어라.” 시저가 말했습니다. “그는 자랑스러울 만한 이유가 있다. 나라면 로마의 2인자가 될 바에는 마을의 우두머리가 되겠다!”
