지각동사 뒤에 오는 보어로서의 형용사
☆ look, sound, smell, taste, feel 등과 같은 지각동사 뒤에는 우리 말로 해석이 부사처럼 해석이 되어도 형용사가 온다. 왜냐하면 이들은 동사를 수식하는 부사의 역할이 아니라, 주어를 설명해 주는 보어의 역할을 하기 때문이다.
This animal looks strange. (이 동물은 이상하게 생겼어.) '이상하게'를 부사로 생각해 look뒤에 strangely라는 부사를 쓰지 않는다.
You look well. '네가 잘 보여' 란 뜻이 아니고, '네 건강이 좋아 보인다'. in good health를 뜻하는 형용사 well이다.
∼처럼 보이다의 appear, seem과 같은 동사도 마찬가지.
ex. It seems/appears difficult for me.
☆ 지각 동사가 아닌 동사 뒤에서 형용사가 보어로 쓰인 경우
die/marry young ... Whom the gods love, die young. 신들이 사랑하는 자는 먼저 죽는다.
keep/stay/remain/sit/stand still/other ajectives...
still에 대해서 잠깐 살펴보면,
If you stay still, you stay in the same position and do not move...The weather is going to stay nice. 좋은 날씨가 계속 될 것 같아.
If air or water is still, it is not moving... The night air was very still. 그날 밤의 공기는 매우 정지돼 있었다.
If a sound stills or is stilled, it becomes quiet...Still waters run deep. 잔잔한 물이 깊다.
If sone or sthg remains in a particular state or condition, they stay in that state or condition and do not change....We all remained silent. 우리는 모두 침묵을 지키고 있었다.
Traffic is at a stand still. 차가 꼼짝하지 않는군요.
